Getting the Most Out of Each Newsletter Issue
A school sports newsletter works best when readers know how to use it. Each issue is meant to be a practical companion to the season rather than a replacement for official announcements. Game times, locations and eligibility notices can change at short notice because of weather, officiating availability or league decisions, so always confirm details against the current schedule before heading out on game day.
What makes a good submission
Community contributions keep the newsletter personal and grounded in Franklin life. If you would like to send something in, a few habits make it easier to share:
- Be specific. Name the sport, the level (varsity, JV or freshman) and the event you are writing about.
- Respect student privacy. Get permission from athletes and families before sharing photos or personal details, and avoid posting information about minors that they would not want made public.
- Keep it positive and fair. Celebrate effort, sportsmanship and teamwork, including the work of opponents, officials and volunteers.
- Keep it short. A focused paragraph or two about a memorable moment often reads better than a full game recap.
Planning around the seasons
High school athletics in Oregon run in three broad seasons: fall, winter and spring. Readers often find it helpful to watch for early-season issues, when tryout reminders, physical exam paperwork and parent meetings tend to come up, and late-season issues, when playoff information and end-of-year recognition take centre stage. Families new to Franklin can use these moments to learn how teams are organised; the teams page gives an overview of the programmes involved.
Supporting beyond the inbox
Reading the newsletter is a good first step, but many of the opportunities it highlights depend on people showing up. Volunteering at concessions, helping with team travel, or joining fundraising efforts through the boosters all make a tangible difference for student athletes. Even attending a lower-profile event, such as a cross-country meet or a JV match, sends a clear message that every athlete's effort is noticed and valued.
