How the Team Levels Work Together

Varsity, junior varsity and club programmes are not separate worlds. In most Oregon high schools they form a single pathway, and understanding how athletes move along it helps families set realistic expectations and get the most out of each season.

Tryouts and placement

Many sports hold tryouts at the start of each season, and coaches place athletes on varsity or JV based on current skill, position needs, experience and readiness for a heavier competitive load. A JV spot is not a verdict on an athlete's future. Underclassmen often spend a year or two at JV level, getting meaningful playing time, before stepping up. Some sports, such as cross-country or track, tend to welcome everyone who commits to practice, with varsity spots in meets earned through times and marks.

Eligibility and paperwork

Before a student can practise or compete, schools generally require a current sports physical, emergency contact details, signed concussion and participation forms, and proof of academic eligibility. Oregon high school sports follow statewide eligibility standards, so grades matter all season long, not just at tryouts. Finishing forms early avoids missing the first days of practice.

What club sports add

Club sports fill gaps for activities that are not part of the school's official sanctioned offering, or give students a lower-pressure way to stay active. They often rely heavily on student leadership and parent volunteers, which makes them a good place to build organisational skills alongside athletic ones.

Getting involved beyond the roster

  • Team managers and statisticians keep records, run equipment and are valued members of the programme.
  • Supporters can check the game schedule and turn out for JV games as well as varsity, where crowds are often thinner.
  • Families can help with travel, fundraising and game-day tasks through the boosters.

If you are unsure which team fits a student, the best first step is to talk directly with the coach or the athletic office. Questions about specific sports can also be sent through the contact page.
