Welcome to the Franklin Athletics Athlete Eligibility Checklist. This guide is designed to help athletes understand the requirements for participation in our sports programs.
To ensure eligibility, athletes must meet the following criteria:
- Age Requirements: Athletes must be within the age limits set by the Oregon School Activities Association (OSAA).
- Academic Standing: Athletes must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0 and be in good academic standing.
- Residency: Athletes must reside within the Franklin High School district or meet transfer eligibility rules.
- Physical Examination: A current sports physical must be on file, completed by a licensed healthcare provider.
- Consent Forms: All required consent and insurance forms must be signed by a parent or guardian.
- Behavioral Standards: Athletes are expected to adhere to the Franklin Athletics Code of Conduct.
It is important for athletes and their families to review these requirements carefully. Meeting these criteria ensures a smooth and successful season for everyone involved.
If you have any questions regarding eligibility or need further assistance, please do not hesitate to reach out to our athletic department.
Staying Eligible Through the Whole Season
Eligibility is not a box you tick once in August and forget. Grades, attendance and paperwork are checked throughout the year, and a missed deadline can keep an athlete off the field just as surely as an injury. A little planning before each season makes the difference between a calm first practice and a scramble for signatures.
Build a simple pre-season routine
- Check the physical's expiry date. Sports physicals in Oregon are valid for a set period, not forever. Note when your current exam runs out and book the next appointment early, since clinics get busy in the weeks before fall sports begin.
- Gather forms in one place. Keep copies of consent, insurance and emergency contact forms together, digitally or in a folder, so you can resubmit quickly if something is lost.
- Review grades at progress reports, not just at term end. Catching a slipping class at mid-term leaves time to meet with a teacher, use tutoring or adjust study habits before eligibility is affected.
- Talk to a counselor about course load. Athletes thinking about playing in college should ask early about which classes count toward NCAA core course requirements, as these differ from high school graduation rules.
Transfers and special situations
Families who move, change schools or have unusual circumstances should contact the athletic office before the season, not after. OSAA transfer rules can be detailed, and some cases require a waiver or extra documentation that takes time to process. Bringing your questions in early gives staff the chance to explain the options clearly.
Coming back from injury or illness
If an athlete is sidelined, especially with a suspected concussion, Oregon law requires medical clearance from a qualified healthcare professional before returning to play. Follow your provider's guidance and keep the athletic trainer and coach informed; this is general information, and your doctor is the right person for individual medical advice.
Once everything is in order, check the game schedule to plan ahead, and browse the team pages for sport-specific details. For anything still unclear, use our contact page.
