How to Measure and Choose Between Sizes
A size chart is only as useful as the measurements you bring to it. Use a soft tailor's tape rather than a metal one, and measure over a thin T-shirt or compression layer, not a hoodie. For the chest, wrap the tape around the fullest part, under the arms and across the shoulder blades, keeping it level and snug but not tight. For the waist, measure at the natural waistline, usually just above the belly button, or where game shorts or pants will actually sit. Have a teammate or parent hold the tape, because measuring yourself tends to tilt the tape and give a smaller number.
When you fall between two sizes
Many athletes land on the edge of a range, for example a 37-inch chest. A few general rules help:
- Size up for layering. Football, lacrosse and other sports worn over pads or base layers usually need room to move.
- Size for the season, not today. Freshmen and sophomores often grow during the year, so a little extra room is usually better than a jersey that is tight by playoffs.
- Think about the sport's cut. Basketball and soccer tops are often worn looser, while track, wrestling and swim gear is designed to fit close, so follow the coach's guidance for those programs.
- Chest and waist may differ. If your top and bottom fall into different sizes, say so when you place your order rather than picking one size for both.
Fit checks once the uniform arrives
Try everything on with the gear you will wear during games. Raise your arms overhead, crouch into a ready stance and sprint a few steps. Jerseys should not ride up past the waistband, shorts should stay put without constant adjusting, and nothing should pinch at the shoulders or thighs. Check numbers and lettering for any defects before washing.
Caring for team gear
Uniforms are often reused across seasons, so care matters. Wash inside out in cold water, skip bleach and fabric softener, and hang dry when possible, since high dryer heat can shrink fabric and crack printed numbers. Return any loaned items clean and on time.
